Will Your Remodeling Project Make You Happy?

Will Your Remodeling Project Make You Happy

When homeowners consider a remodeling project they often consider the return on investment (ROI) before beginning. Will the cost of making the improvement pay off when/if they decide to sell their house later?

While it’s wise to consider the financial return of a remodeling project there is another factor that is perhaps even more important. Will doing the project make your home more comfortable, convenient, and/or enjoyable? In other words, will the project you’re thinking about make you happy?

When the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) recently published their Remodeling Impact Report they added a new factor called “The Joy Score.” In addition to showing cost and probable ROI, projects were ranked (on a scale of 1 to 10—with 10 being high) as to their “Joy Score.” Here are a few of the results.

  • New Master Suite | Joy Score: 9.7
  • Kitchen Upgrade | Joy Score: 9.4
  • Complete Kitchen Renovation | Joy Score: 9.8
  • Bathroom Renovation | Joy Score: 9.3
  • Add New Bathroom | Joy Score: 10
  • Basement Conversion | Joy Score: 9.4

As you think about remodeling your home – consider projects that will make you happy living in your home – and give you a good return on investment.

What’s In YOUR Wall?

Whats in Your Wall

When a couple in Franklin, Tennessee remodeled a 1910 shotgun cottage they discovered all kinds of “surprises” that had been hidden away for years. One thing they stumbled onto was a faded friendship quilt (see photo) with the names of many local citizens stitched in. Upon closer inspection, they spotted the names of some of their relatives in one of the triangles, including a few of their grandmother’s siblings, who were an early act at the Grand Ole Opry.
